Recycled Paint Used in Major Infrastructure Upgrade

Paintback Recycled Paint used in the Mordialloc Level Crossing Removal Project.

Mordialloc Station Piers 5

As part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to remove 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne's Metropolitan train network, the Mordialloc Level Crossing Removal Project removed three level crossings in Mordialloc and Aspendale, and built a new elevated station with a vibrant station precinct.

Supporting the project's commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles, Paintback partnered with the Mordialloc Level Crossing Removal Project to
incorporate recycled paint into the construction works.

Concrete piers supporting the elevated rail infrastructure were coated using paint manufactured from 100% recycled water-based paint collected through the Paintback
scheme. Recycled paint was also used across selected concrete retaining walls
throughout the precinct.

The colour scheme, featuring ‘Pale Eucalypt’ and ‘Warm Neutral’, was tinted to meet the project’s architectural design specifications. Paint recovered through the Paintback scheme is processed and remanufactured into a reusable paint base that can be tinted into a range of colours suitable for commercial and infrastructure
applications.

Building the new Mordialloc Station has delivered a modern transport hub featuring improved all-abilities access, safer walking and cycling connections, and enhanced traffic flow. Journeys are safer and more reliable for the 26,000 vehicles that used to travel through these level crossings everyday, with drivers now travelling under the elevated rail bridges at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and on the new link road at Station Street, Aspendale.

This project demonstrates how recovered materials can be successfully integrated into major infrastructure projects without compromising on quality, durability, or design intent, supporting the transition toward a more circular economy for paint in Australia.
